Sir Anthony Hopkins Biography

Anthony Hopkins

Biography

Anthony Hopkins was born December 31, 1937 in Margam near Port Talbot Wales.  In his native Wales, at 17, he joined the YMCA amateur theater production.  With newfound enthusiasm, combined with proficiency at the piano, he won a scholarship to the Welsh College of Music & Drama and later attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.  In 1991, Hopkins' exceptional performance as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" won him an Academy Award.

In addition to his Academy Award and three other Oscar nominations, his career honors include three British Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards and the Cecil B. De Mille Award.  In 1987, he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, and he was knighted in 1993.

In 2000, Hopkins became a U.S. citizen.  Today, America is the country he most identifies with.  During his numerous cross country journeys he discovered and became enamored with the distinctive desert and mountain topography of the Southwest.  Always exploring and discovering the stunning landscape of America.

In 2002 with the encouragement of his wife, Stella, Hopkins started painting.  His Ink Drawings and Acrylic Paintings have been inspired by the "Impressions" of his travels through the American Southwest.  He conveys a visual interpretation of the American vastness by often using abstracted form, light, shadow and color.

Hopkins Art has been acquired by numerous private collectors.
